Animal Phyla and Their Characteristics
After animal kingdom animal species usually fall into one of seven different categories, known as phyla. Depending on definitions, the animal kingdom Animalia contains about 31 phyla while the plant kingdom Plantae contains 104. Within each phylum, animals share a set of common characteristics that distinguish them from animals in other phyla.
Features of the Animal Kingdom
Even though members of the animal kingdom are incredibly diverse, they all share a number of common features that set them apart from other organisms. These characteristics include:
- Multicellularity: Animals are composed of many cells, unlike single-celled organisms like bacteria.
- Heterotrophy: Animals cannot produce their own food and must consume other organisms to obtain energy.
- Mobility: Most animals are able to move around, either by swimming, flying, crawling, or walking.
- Reproduction: Animals reproduce sexually, meaning they combine genetic material from two parents to create offspring.
By understanding the different phyla and their shared characteristics, we can gain a better appreciation for the incredible diversity of the animal kingdom and the amazing adaptations that animals have evolved to survive in a wide range of environments.
