The History of Father's Day

The idea for Father's Day originated in the early 20th century. In 1908, Sonora Dodd, a woman from Washington state, suggested the establishment of a holiday to honor fathers. Dodd's father, William Smart, had raised her and her siblings on his own after their mother died.

In 1910, the first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington. The holiday quickly gained popularity and was officially recognized by Congress in 1972.
